Consumerism

When you search ‘Consumerism’ on Google:

Consumerism is the idea that increasing the consumption of goods and services purchased in the market is always a desirable goal and that a person's wellbeing and happiness depend fundamentally on obtaining consumer goods and material possessions.

Is It?

Consumerism increases debt levels which in turn results in mental health problems like stress and depression. Trying to follow the latest trends when you have limited resources can be very exhausting to the mind and body. Consumerism forces people to work harder, borrow more and spend less time with loved ones.

Oh Yes!

The major causes for the evolution of consumerism have been the continuous rise in prices, underperformance of product, quality of the service, Shortage of product and deceptive advertising.

Hmmm….

I came across two products – different brands, different categories, one used in toilets, and the other on clothes and significantly different priced. Interestingly, there were two things in common

  1. they came from the same company and

  2. their ingredients.

This is where I delved into the ingredients and started identifying products with the same or similar formulations.

Guess what, in the case of Home Care products, almost all have 90% the same or similar active ingredients, whereas, in Personal Care, it's just the same chemical composition with a minor twist.

To my surprise, I realized that two face creams, different brands but the same company have the same set of ingredients, but the pricing of one was 3X times the other.

I wonder why now I know; this is CONSUMERISM!

Be conscious of what products we use, their ingredients, packaging and do-good benefits in the long run. Beware of products that grab your share of wallet, instead invest in the right formulation at the right price. Look for authenticity, simplicity and freedom to choose what’s right for you.
